The Helmet of Salvation

The Helmet of Salvation is part of the armor of God as described in Ephesians 6:10-20 by Apostle Paul to the Church at Ephesus. This is a spiritual armour, which gives us an illustration that we should know that our salvation in Christ Jesus is secure. The reason it is called the helmet of salvation because, the helmet protects our thoughts by not allowing the world to influence us to doubt our salvation in Christ Jesus. The moment we start doubting our salvation in Christ, we are wearing a broken helmet, where satan has an opening to plant doubtful thoughts in our head. Our Lord Jesus said to Nicodemus:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" - John 3:16

A Christian walk is not a walk where one gets to know whether they are going to heaven or not, only when they die. A Christian walk is a "know so salvation", where a person is assured by Christ Himself, through God's Word, that those who believe in Him are saved and will not perish. Firstly, God the Father does not want anybody to perish, but that all should believe in His Son and have eternal life. Jesus said:

"And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day" - John 6:39

For the above reason, everybody in the world are given an equal opportunity to believe and to recieve Christ by hearing the Gospel. Whether people choose to believe in Christ or not, determines whether they have eternal life or not, as the choice is entirely upto an individual. God will not force anybody, which is why He gave everyone free will to choose whether to believe in His Son or not, just like how He gave a choice to Adam and Eve, whether to partake of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, or to partake of the fruit from the tree of life. Jesus said:

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" - John 5:24

In the above verse, the word "hath", which is Old English for "has", is the Greek word "echo", which is in the present indicative active tense. If a person would only know that they will have eternal life or not, only after they die, then the Greek text would have been written in the future tense, which is not the case. The reason the New Testament was originally written in Greek, is so as to make the context more concise and clear. Apostle John who walked closely with the Lord, before concluding his Gospel testified saying:

"But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name" - John 20:31

It is very important to read the Bible because, the more we read the Bible and get fimiliar with God's Word, the more our faith in Christ grows, and the more confident we become of our salvation in Christ. There is nothing apart from God's Word, that can comfort and assure us of our salvation in Christ. Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy wrote:

"But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" - 2 Timothy 3:14-15

For example, if I were to ask you, between Jesus and satan, who is more powerful? obviously you would say Jesus. But what if I were to ask you, whether you believe in Jesus's ability to save maximum people, or satan's ability to drag maximum people into the lake of fire, what would you say? I'm sure that most people in this case would have their faith rooted in satan's ability to drag more people into the lake of fire. This shows that people actually believe in satan being the powerful one. In conclusion, what people say and what they believe is not the same. This is called being double minded. This is the reason we need to wear the helmet of salvation. It is only through God's Word, we learn that minimum people are going to the lake of fire, and maximum people are going to to heaven, to spend eternity with the Lord. The Bible gives us a list of finite number of people going to the lake of fire in the book of Revelation:

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" - Revelation 21:8

The Bible never says a great multitude of people are on their way to the lake of fire. Apostle John testifies that he saw a great multitude, which no man could number, in heaven with the Lord, in the book of Revelation:

"After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands" - Revelation 7:9

Few people claim that they have had visions of seeing more people burning in the lake of fire. Such visions are a lie from the pits of hell, and are non-scriptural. All visions from the Lord would be in sync with the Bible. The first century believers in Christ walked wearing the helmet of salvation, where they never allowed unbiblical doctrines and traditions to rob them of their assurance of salvation in Christ Jesus. They rebuked any non-scriptural believes and continued to walk as children of the most high God. Nobody was more direct than Apostle John when he said:

"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God" - 1 John 5:13

As New Testament believers in Christ Jesus, we need to wear the helmet of salvation, rejoicing everyday for by His Grace we have been saved through faith, because of which our salvation in Christ is secure, and heaven is our home.
